Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in the body (between 1.5 and 2 square meters total surface area!) and so the quality of what you put on it is really important. Most people associate health with the food you eat- but what you put on your skin is equally important. The standard cosmetic brands are packed with toxic chemicals which (when used day after day, year after year) could potentially affect your health in the long run.

So… this month the focus is all on ‘Natural Skincare’. By natural skincare I mean products based on natural plant extracts & free of the chemical nasties found in so many cosmetics. Here at The Apothecary we stock a large selection of wonderful products. Here are some snippets about some of our brands, plus we have more to come soon including make up and haircare!

Soaps/Shampoos

Faith in Nature: Great shampoos and Conditioners free of SLES, parabens, artificial colours or fragrances.

JĀSÖN: Natural shampoos/conditioners good value for money.

Suma: The Rose Petal & Geranium Shampoo and Conditioner always sells out fast! If you love roses you have to try this- for an aromatherapy experience each time you wash your hair.

Dr Bronner’s: Champions of ethical castille soap products- they apparently have 18 uses from hair to body to clothes washing! Great for travelling. 20 pence of each purchase goes towards ‘Compassion in World Farming’. See the website for more info

Friendly Soap Company: Great range of natural soaps made here in Todmorden! Choose anything from Cinnamon to Tea tree to Peppermint.

Dalit Soaps: Profits go towards ‘Life Association’ – a charity which builds schools and orphanages in deprived parts of India- supporting the ‘Dalit People’ or ‘The Untouchables’. Skincare

Weleda: Luxurious body oils and skin creams based on natural plant oils. ‘Skin Food’ practically has a cult following..

Antipodes: Award winning organic lotions & potions rich in the super antioxidant extract of ‘Vinsanza Grape’ (the night cream has been clinically proven to increase collagen in the skin by a whopping 92% after several weeks of use!)

Daisy Diva: Made locally, these aromatherapy creams (plus some fragrance free options for sensitive skins) are excellent value for money- and great quality. Also vegan friendly.

Green People: Well known for it’s quality face creams- I especially like the ‘Vita Min Fix 24 hour face cream’

Our Tiny Bees: Made in Yorkshire from British beeswax. Love the bath melt (cocoa butter and honey- enough said!); the Uber balm (dry sensitive skin) and the vitamin clay face mask (powder to make as needed)

Viridian: Reknowned for their range of supplements, Viridian have an equally good skin care range- the rose oil is a divine blend of rose and other antioxidant rich plant oils. The therapeutic herbal balms are also fab- Horsechestnut is good for varicose veins.
